73 Rewind: From Worst to First
The final weekend at Wrigley went right down to the wire as the Mets clinched their second division title in five seasons.
It's been a long year. I was on 14 Yankees teams that won, but this has to be a big thrill because we had to jump over five clubs to do it. We were 12 games back. I told the guys I'm proud of you whether you win or lose the next four. Just give me 100 percent for the next few days.” - Yogi Berra
Friday, a rainstorm postponed the first game in the weekend series between the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs.
Saturday, another rain out added intrigue and suspense to how the season would end.
On Sunday, with the National League East title was still undecided, the Mets and Cubs played a doubleheader at Wrigley Field.
New York held a skinny 1 1/2 game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals and a 2 1/2 game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Cubs shutout the Mets, 1-0, in the first game of the doubleheader. Meanwhile, the Cardinals beat the Phillies, 3-1. The Mets bounced back in the second game, beating the Cubs, 9-2, to cling to a one-game lead.
