Done Deal: Now what?
According to media reports, Carlos Correa and the Twins are finalizing a six-year, $200 million contract, pending a physical. For Mets fans it begs the question: Now what?
According to media reports, Carlos Correa and the Minnesota Twins are finalizing a six-year, $200 million contract, pending a physical.
The news is certainly deflating for Mets fans, but there is no point in belaboring the story. The deal answered one big lingering question, but it still begs the question:
Correa agreed to a 13yr/$350m deal with the San Francisco Giants, but he failed his physical. The Mets then offered Correa 12yr./$315m and, again, Correa’s physical was flagged. So what gives? Do the Twins just believe the potential reward is greater than the risk?

Social Media Reaction
Twins fans took to social media, and despite any potential risk, they are feeling good about the decision, calling Correa a “franchise” player and the revived deal a “watershed moment” for the organization.

Sans Correa, how will it impact the Mets?
The potential of dropping Correa’s bat in the middle of a lineup that featured Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor, Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonso and Starling Marte would have been an immediate upgrade.
But is his health sustainable? That remains to be seen. It’s a risk the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets ultimately couldn’t justify given the terms. The Twins, on the other hand, are willing to roll the dice.
As for veteran Eduardo Escobar and/or rookie Brett Baty, the news is an opportunity. If Escobar returns to being a consistent offensive player or Baty hits like he did in Binghamton and Syracuse, we can all move on.
If Baty and Escobar struggle or slump, just imagine the media pressure that will shadow their every at-bat? Unless Steve Cohen and Billy Eppler find another creative solution, you can be certain that we haven’t heard the end of this winter’s chaos.
