The New York Mets announced last week that David Wright’s No. 5 will be retired next July at Citi Field. The news set off a social media debate.

There was no question that Mets fans admire Wright, but the one question a lot of fans were asking was: Why David Wright?

After speaking with Mets front office personnel about how a player, manager, broadcaster, and/or influential team official today is selected, it came as no surprise that there is a longstanding process for both Hall of Fame and number retirement selection.
