Mets owner Joan Payson was in attendance when Willie Mays made his New York Mets debut on Mother’s Day at Shea Stadium. Mays, who started at first base, did what heroes do when he cracked a home run against reliever Don Carrithers of the San Francisco Giants (his former team), to lift the Mets to a 5-4 win.
