Under sunny, blue skies, more than 32,000 fans came out to Shea Stadium to watch baseball ghosts of a foregone era of New York baseball play the annual Old Timers Day Game.
Little did anyone know at the time, but the day would also mark Casey Stengel's final game as Mets manager (and 3,753rd as a major league manager). In true form, the Mets were humbled by the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1.
After the game, Stengel showered, dressed and headed to Toots Shor’s, his favorite New York watering hole. With Edna [Stengel] back in California, the 75-year old Mets manager lingered at the bar until closing. What actually happened next is still unknown.
