The New York Mets were sitting at .500 (22-22), four games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League East and hosting a weekend series at Shea Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals. A quick glance at the boxscore shows nothing particularly unusual. Ed Lynch pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs and Mookie Wilson hit a two-run HR in the first inning.

Mets win: 5-2.
