During a recent MetsRewind Podcast, former New York Mets GM Joe McIlvaine shared the story of the first time he met Lenny Dykstra.

“This little guy walks in, he's about 5’ 8” and 150 pounds,” said McIlvaine. “I didn't know him. I hadn't seen him.Harry asked him if he was the bat boy and the kid looked at him right in the eye and he said, ‘My name is Lenny Dykstra and I'm the best player you're gonna see here today.’”

McIlvaine said Dykstra outperformed every outfielder in camp.

“These other guys were looking at him like, ‘Who is this little guy?’”

“When you talk about the insides of a kid were burning, this was him. His insides were just burning to be successful …There was nobody who was gonna tell him anybody was better.”
