“I can’t really blame (Whitey) Herzog for trading me. But to the Mets? That’s another matter. At the time, it was an insult. In 1983, it wasn’t easy being the Mets. You can read a losing team a mile away—on the field, in the dugout, everywhere. The players are listless; they care about what’s happening (blood tells), but they’re either numbed into lethargy or, as a kind of defense mechanism, pretend they don’t care.
