Prior to the first pitch at Shea Stadium, even Bob Murphy, the optimistic, glass-half-full New York Mets broadcaster, appeared uncertain about what to expect from Nolan Ryan.

By 1970, hope of the one-time Mets prospect reaching the top of the team’s elite rotation, had begun to slip away. Ryan struggled with his control and a series of injuries during his first three seasons. Heading into his start against the Phillies, Ryan had not pitched since spring training.
